A NEW CORONA WAVE COMING TOWARDS US THIS SUMMER?

Ugh, after we finally thought COVID-19 was behind us, the RIVM (The Netherlands) reports that the numbers are rising. In the past seven days, 15,526 people tested positive for corona. That is an increase of 64 percent. According to the RIVM, the more contagious sub-variants of omicron are gaining ground in the Netherlands. But, don’t panic: that increase is not yet reflected in the hospital.

Whether this will affect the festival summer, we don’t think so. After all, we have to learn to live with COVID-19 these days. Despite the fact that already since the beginning of June the number of positive tests has been rising, this is not currently causing many more hospitalizations of people with corona. As long as the pressure on hospitals remains low, this will not have a negative impact on events.

Especially in Amsterdam-Amstelland, Utrecht and Hollands-Midden the number of corona infections increased significantly. The increase is visible in all age groups, says RTL Nieuws.

NO NEED TO WORRY?

The infectious sub-variants could potentially cause more infections and hospitalizations, Koopmans says. “But, it’s certainly not as much of a problem as in previous waves, because the built-up immunity is better.” She stresses that currently many more people have experienced coronin infection, have been vaccinated or both. And that makes a big difference. “But at the same time, you can also be sure that if the virus circulates more, there will also be more hospitalizations. It will then mainly be the most vulnerable people who have not been vaccinated. Exactly how many admissions will be involved is still unclear.”
