GOOD NEWS FOR THE DUTCHIES: CARNIVAL COULD TAKE PLACE THIS YEAR -

The Dutch minister of security (Minister Yesilgöz) thinks that the Dutch carnival’s celebration can take place in modified form. “I’m going to sit down with the carnaval mayors about how we can make carnaval take place this year,” she told RTL News. Last night she already had a conversation with mayor Jack Mikkers of Den Bosch about the possible scenarios and how carnival can be celebrated in corona time.

Unfortunately, carnival will not return quite yet, but a modified form of the festivity is being considered. “Unless the virus is completely gone, but I think that’s a little too soon. And you can’t say that the virus doesn’t exist those days.” Said Yesilgöz to RTL News.

CARNIVAL ON 1,5 METER?

Because infections are currently fairly high, certain corona rules will apply during the party. What these rules will be, is still unclear. What we do know, is that keeping a distance, forming groups in the street and the closing time of the catering industry are difficult to enforce. So perhaps this will be taken into account.

Yesilgöz does not yet want to anticipate which corona rules will apply. The current package of corona measures (including closing the catering industry at ten o’clock in the evening and keeping a distance of one and a half meters) also applies, in principle, during Carnival. Although the government weighs the measures again in two weeks. Carnival will be celebrated this year between Saturday, February 26 and Tuesday, March 1.

THE CONVERSATION WILL CONTINUE

“We have agreed to explore different scenarios.” The carnival mayors will be talking to local organizations, hospitality entrepreneurs, other mayors and others in the coming weeks to look at different options together. “We’ll be in close contact about that in the coming weeks. By mid-February, we will look at which scenario is the most realistic and how we can shape carnival,” Yesilgöz says.
